Saturn reaches opposition tonight, putting the ringed planet in prime position for some of the year's best observing. Opening up its rings again after last year's nearly on-edge appearance, it will also appear brighter and slightly larger than it did at its previous opposition.

Join Sky & Telescope in observing this celestial occasion. Our expert observing guidance and detailed planet maps will give you exactly what you need to look at the Lord of the Rings this evening.

Turn a telescope toward Saturn and there’s much more to explore within and beyond its famous rings. Depending on your equipment and viewing conditions, you may be able to spot the Cassini Division, subtle cloud belts across the planet, and several of Saturn’s moons.
